What Will Movers Not Move?

We all have favorite possessions. They might be things you use in your hobby like collecting guns or gardening. But are you aware there are some things essential to you that a moving company isn’t allowed to move? It’s true.

Certain laws and regulations prevent a moving company from transporting items across state lines. After all, each state has its own laws. Some items however are not allowed to be transported at all, the same way you aren’t allowed to mail them. It’s simply too dangerous for everyone involved.

Other full service moving companies have had costly experiences moving certain items. They may have incurred damage to their equipment or been taken to court or fined by the authorities. Each company has its unique policy so finding the right one for you before you begin packing is essential.

Whether you need local moving or long-distance moving, you need to know which items are forbidden by movers. Here’s a shortlist of items to get you started:

  • Corrosive, explosive, or flammable items. To move such items is entirely illegal. Don’t even ask. This includes fireworks, cleaning supplies, car batteries, bleach, etc.
  • Weapons and ammunition. These are best moved in your personal vehicle but make sure to check the gun laws of the state you’re moving to.
  • Gasoline or kerosene. These are too risky and readily available at your destination.
  • Chemicals, ammonia, acids of any kind. This includes innocent-sounding chemicals like swimming pool treatments.
  • Aerosol deodorants and hairsprays, nail cosmetics. Take them in the car with you.
  • Decorator paints, gels, or stains. This may include hobby paints. Ask your moving company for details.
  • Lamp oil, citronella oils, etc. A professional mover will advise you on certain things like draining your yard tiki lamps of oil and your lawnmower of gasoline before it is packed. They may have a checklist for reference and it’s always a good idea to ask.
  • Plants. Other items your mover won’t transport are garden plants or house plants. It is illegal to move plants more than 150 miles unless you’ve acquired a special waiver or permit. It’s also likely the plants wouldn’t survive the journey in a moving truck. The best way to move any prized plants is to place them in your car with the window cracked a bit so they can get air.
  • Pets. Your pets are living creatures and no mover wants to take responsibility for moving them. They belong with you in the car which is exactly where they want to be, with you.
  • Food. This isn’t a dangerous item but most movers don’t want perishables in the truck. Not only can the items spoil and create unpleasant smells in their moving vans, it just isn’t something sensible for them to deal with. Pack a cooler and take it in the car with you.
  • Personal heirlooms, cash, medicines, jewelry, small electronics. For everyone’s peace of mind and to keep it professional, all personal items of great value should travel with you.

This is a general list of a mover’s forbidden items. However, every moving company has its own policy so contact them if you are in doubt about an item before you hire them.
An ethical residential moving company restricts these items for everyone’s safety and also to protect your insurance claims if anything should happen.
